Tom Mosser is now offering the original A Golden Retriever at the Museum for sale, with a special twist—this 3ft x 4ft oil painting replaces the iconic tennis ball centerpiece with a Chuckit Ball. The piece, created over 4 years on canvas, adds a heartfelt touch to the celebrated series.
Why a Chuckit Ball?
“The inspiration behind my Museum Series has always been my golden retriever, Lucas,” Tom shares. “When designing the original piece, I wondered: ‘What kind of painting would Lucas adore?’ Naturally, a tennis ball came to mind—and it became an iconic part of the series.”
But here’s the twist: Lucas was never a tennis ball fan!
“We’ve kept this secret for too long,” Tom admits. “The truth is, Lucas didn’t care about tennis balls. He was a Chuckit Ball dog through and through! I think it was the rubbery smell and the satisfying squish that made him obsessed with them. They also made a distinct sound when they hit the ground, which helped Lucas track them—a big plus, since tennis balls were too quiet for him, and he’d lose interest almost instantly.”
With this revelation, Tom felt it was time to pay tribute to the Chuckit Ball and the dogs who love it. He’s currently in talks with Petmate to release fundraising prints based on the piece. But now, for the first time, the original painting is available for purchase.
“Chuckit Balls have been a lifesaver,” Tom adds. “Not just with Lucas but also with my new golden, Franco. It felt right to celebrate this amazing dog toy—and all the joy it’s brought to us.”
